Unsafe sleep practices are a leading cause of infant death in Colorado. Following safe sleep guidelines can dramatically reduce the risk of sleep-related infant deaths, including SIDS.
The ABCs of Safe Sleep
Alone
Baby should sleep alone in their own sleep space. No bed-sharing with parents, siblings, or pets.
Back
Always place baby on their back to sleep, for every nap and at nighttime.
Crib
Use a firm, flat mattress in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard. No soft bedding, pillows, bumpers, or toys.
Additional Safe Sleep Tips
- Use a firm, flat mattress covered with a fitted sheet — nothing else in the crib
- Keep the room at a comfortable temperature; dress baby in a sleep sack instead of blankets
- Offer a pacifier at nap time and bedtime
- Don't use inclined sleepers, car seats, or swings for routine sleep
- Avoid smoking during pregnancy and after birth
- Breastfeed if possible — it reduces the risk of SIDS
- Make sure all caregivers (grandparents, babysitters, etc.) know safe sleep practices
Spread the Word
Share safe sleep information with every caregiver in your child's life.
